Hi, I'm Jim Bowers, known in MALI as Yacouba Coulibaly! This is a relatively new web site for the Bowers family, created in Jan 2003. We live in the Republic of MALI, in West Africa, where we serve as Christian missionaries to the Bambara, Malinke, and Fulani of MALI. We are members of United World Mission, based in Charlotte, NC in the States. Kayes has been our home for 20 years, but only in 2003 have we been able to have internet access. MALI is improving tho: in Dec '06 we're getting DSL, WOW! There are four children in the family: Danielle who graduated from Dakar Academy and will now be a senior at Houghton College (upstate New York). This coming school Ruthanne will be already in 11th grade, and Benjie will be in 9th grade at Dakar Academy. Susanna will be in 7th grade for another year at home school with us. We hail from Philly and Baltimore in the States, and we recently enjoyed a year of home ministry in America until July 04 after a long five year term or service. Two of the kids attended the same middle school Jenn did a few years ago near Baltimore! In '06 we took a short home ministry of two summer months to visit our friends, churches, and family who so lovingly pray for us and help us so kindly in this ministry. |

Hi, I'm Jennifer Bowers, also known as Djeneba Traore My Malian name is pronounced "jenna-bah". I am the proud mother of three girls and a carrot-top boy. We have homeschooled them in MALI thru the elementary years, and have allowed the Dakar Academy in Senegal to teach them in junior high and high school. Danielle graduated with honors in June 2003 and is studying English/Secondary Ed. at Houghton College in western NY State. When in Africa I am a member of DA's school board representing the UWM member interests. Visiting neighbors; helping teach the local church's women's group; hosting Fulani and Bambara friends; reading, quilting, and cross stitch fill my hours in Kayes. e-mail: malibowers@gmail.com |

The Ministry to the Malinke and Fulani Peoples of the Region of Kayes in MALI. The first Protestant missionaries came to Mali in the second decade of the 20th century. United World Mission was invited to begin work in Kayes, the westernmost region, in 1954. Churches were established among the Malinke people and a UWM-affiliated national church was organized in 1967. With evangelism and church planting as the primary goal, over the years our mission has performed numerous types of ministries to reach souls for Christ. For example: medical dispensaries, an orphanage, children's primary education, Bible school, literacy, Theological Education by Extension, camps, well-digging, agriculture, and youth work. Mission stations were established at various times in five different locations. The primary emphasis has been to reach the Malinke tribe, and also the related Bambara and Khassonke peoples living in the same area of western Mali. In recent years we have also attempted to establish churches among the Fulani, the Muslim nomads of the African Sahel. The number of UWM missionaries on the Mali field has varied from over 20 to as few as four in recent years. Today our small team is located in Kayes, and all members are engaged in church planting by "Storying," or chronological Bible teaching with an emphasis on the character of God. Radio, film, cassettes, books, tracts, and other media are used to communicate, all in local languages, these timeless truths of the Savior to the Muslims and animists of MALI and Senegal. |
